Why High-Quality Math Tutoring Rarely Fails at the Math

What parents are rarely told: the reason some tutoring works and other tutoring doesn’t almost never lies in the subject. It lies in a variable few people measure.

Opening
There is one inquiry that reaches me, in nearly identical form, several times a year. A mother writes — usually in the evening, often on a Sunday — and describes a situation she can no longer set aside. Her child is bright. Everyone says so. He or she did well in primary school, sometimes effortlessly. But now, in secondary school, before the Gymi entrance examination, or in the IB Diploma Programme, something is beginning to slip. The grades are not catastrophic, but they don’t match the child the parents know. Two or three tutors have been tried. It hasn’t really helped.
The question at the end of the message is almost always the same: What are we doing wrong?
My polite answer is usually: probably nothing. You are simply looking in the wrong place.
The math is rarely the problem
When you look for a math tutor, you logically look for someone good at math. That assumption isn’t wrong. It’s just incomplete. Over years of working with students preparing for the Swiss Gymi entrance exam, the Matura, or the IB Diploma, I’ve made one observation that initially sounds counterintuitive:
Tutoring engagements that fail almost never fail because of the subject. They fail because of something that is hard to see and even harder to measure.
This invisible variable has a name less cumbersome than what it describes. I call it fit. Not the chemistry between tutor and child — that’s pleasant, but replaceable. I mean something deeper, which unfolds across three levels:
- Fit between competencies and demands — the right height of the bar.
- Coherence between the person learning and the kind of task — the dimension of meaning.
- The relationship between tutor and learner — trust and respect as the steering mechanism between these two poles.
When these three elements align, something happens that many parents recognise from their own experience but rarely articulate: the child begins to work without constant pushing. They make mistakes without breaking. They stay engaged even when things get hard. Not because they are suddenly “more motivated”, but because they are finally learning in a place where they are not working against themselves. A flow effect sets in once the child or young person discovers that mistakes are welcome learning companions. The search for challenge takes the place of the fear of it.
When these three elements don’t align, the opposite happens. This is where most tutors fall short — not because they are bad at mathematics, but because a pedagogical principle is overlooked: the assimilation of knowledge accelerates and consolidates when learners feel addressed in their personality and motivational structure. When essential parts of a person come into resonance, the phenomenon can be described through different performance models — Growth Mindset, Flow theory, Grit. They all point at related things. The consequence is always the same: didactically and methodologically professional math tutoring can evaporate if it fails to trigger self-reinforcing learning experiences in the student.
The word self-reinforcing is deliberately ambiguous: it means both the strengthening of resilience and the positive feedback loop within the learning process itself.
Three tutors, the same child
Let me illustrate this with a composite example. A boy, twelve years old, preparing for the Langzeitgymnasium entrance exam. Curious, alert, with a clear interest in the natural sciences. He enjoys math in principle, but under pressure he stumbles.
The first tutor is an outstanding mathematician, ETH degree, highly methodical. He works fast, precisely, with dense blocks of exercises. The boy grows quieter. At home he says the lessons are exhausting. After three months, he asks to stop.
The second tutor is warm, patient, good with children. She praises generously, explains slowly, builds trust. The boy looks forward to the sessions. But his grades at school don’t move. After six months the parents realise: it’s a pleasant hour, but nothing is changing.
What both tutors missed wasn’t the mathematics. It was the person. The first tutor treated the boy like a small ETH student — capable, but at a demand level that ignored his sensitivity to pressure. The second tutor treated him like a child to be protected — caring, but at a demand level that no longer engaged his curiosity.
In both cases, the math was correct. The focus on it neglected fit and coherence. The relationship was at once overdemanding and underdemanding. What was missing was what makes strain bearable in the first place.
This is why VIA MEDICI works with what I call the integrity buffer.
Strengthening personality through the integrity buffer
When I speak of integrity, I do not mean moral unassailability. Personal integrity, as I understand it, is an assimilation-friendly and resilient identity — something that can be described, observed and shaped.
Elsewhere I have tried to capture this phenomenon theoretically: from the interplay of fit, fulfilment and meaning, something emerges that I call the integrity buffer — an inner space that acts like an elastic shock absorber when demands grow hard and sometimes contradict one’s own convictions.
The VIA MEDICI theory describes how this buffer is built. The model of the integrity buffer shows how it works, psycho-regulatively, as a shock absorber. The two are two movements of the same thing: construction and effect.
VIA MEDICI activates this integrity buffer psychologically on at least three levels:
The first level is the personality of the child. How does this child handle demands, mistakes, pace? A child high in agreeableness (Big Five) and low in stress tolerance needs a different starting temperature than an extraverted, competitive one. Both can solve the same math problem — but not by the same route.
The second level is the structure of interests. Where does the child place themselves when given a free choice? The RIASEC model from career and interest psychology distinguishes six basic orientations — from the practical-realistic to the investigative, from the artistic to the enterprising. Math can be a field of investigation for an inquisitive child, a tool for a practical one, a language for a socially oriented one. A tutor who explains math the same way every time reaches only the third of children for whom that one approach happens to feel natural.
*The third level is what motivational psychology calls volition** — the capacity to see something through, even when initial enthusiasm fades. Volition is not a character trait but a resource. It is fed by the sense that what you are doing fits your own competence profile and your own understanding of self and world. From that sense, willpower grows. It is what people commonly call Grit* — persistence under pressure. This phenomenon is neither “gritting your teeth and pushing through” nor innate. It is a by-product of coherence.
A tutor who ignores any one of these levels can teach excellent math and still produce poor results. A tutor who attends to all three can teach modest math and produce remarkable ones. The latter is not my standard. But the observation holds: the variable on which real tutoring acts is not the subject. It is the person learning it.
A small, uncomfortable observation
A well-optimised school career is not the same as a well-conducted educational path. The first is a race against an — often unquestioned — target. The second is a process through which a child becomes an adult who — sometimes by detours — becomes robust and knows what to do with what they can do.
Many of the families I work with want only the first at the beginning. That is legitimate, and I help them with it. But part of my job is to show them, early enough, that the second — through the construction of the individual integrity buffer and its self-reinforcing quality — actually works better.
What a different kind of tutoring looks like
Concretely: before I work through the first problem with a child, I want to know who I am working with. Not in every detail — that would be presumptuous — but in the essentials. How does this child react to frustration? What do they do when they don’t understand something? Why is something not understood? When are they focused, when not? What are their interests? What does school mean for their family, and what does the upcoming exam mean for their image of themselves?
This diagnosis happens during the introductory conversation and then alongside the work in subsequent lessons. This assessment allows me to calibrate the level of demand to the person, without losing sight of the curriculum. I choose examples that connect with the child’s or young person’s world of imagination. I adjust pace and explanatory style. And I communicate with parents in a form that doesn’t alarm them but informs them — they know at any point what we are working on and why. Where personal development hinders the learning process — for example during puberty — early involvement of the parents is, for me, indispensable.
A mother from Meilen, whose son I prepared for the Langzeitgymnasium, captured this in a sentence better than I could: “Thanks to his experience, he attended to our son’s learning style and disposition and adapted the lessons accordingly.” That is precisely what is meant. No more, no less.
Why this question matters now
We live in an age of exploding learning tools. Adaptive software, AI-driven tutoring platforms, highly personalised practice apps. Much of it is useful. Some of it is impressive. But none of these tools solves the underlying problem. They all assume a learner who already knows how to learn — or an adult who can guide them there.
The variable I am speaking of cannot be automated. It is what remains when you set all the tools aside: the question of whether what is happening here, right now, fits the person to whom it is happening. That question is not nostalgic. It is the most important one any learning relationship has to answer.
It is precisely here — at the intersection of psychological differentiation, subject-matter clarity, and a relationship that is not interchangeable — that what I mean by performance-oriented math tutoring begins.
What comes next
