How children can rebuild confidence in their mathematical thinking through safety, a different approach to mistakes and small, real moments of success – and how this opens up new paths in education.
Getting started
Maths anxiety cannot simply be talked away. A child who has long responded to maths with pressure, shame or withdrawal needs more than: ‘You just need to practise more.’ Practice matters. But it only truly helps once the child returns to a state in which learning is possible again.
That is why, in MONTES, I focus not only on content but also on the learning relationship, the pace, how mistakes are handled and the child’s self-confidence. In my experience, children do not become more relaxed because they suddenly know everything. They begin to relax when they realise that not knowing something does not lead to embarrassment.
That distinction is crucial.
Safety before performance
Anxiety changes the way we learn. Focus narrows, thoughts become scattered and the body is on alert. In that state, even a well-meant explanation can feel overwhelming.
For me, effective maths support does not begin with pressure but with safety. The child should feel: Here I am allowed to ask questions. Here I am allowed to take my time. Here I am allowed to make a mistake without it turning into a judgement about me.
This sense of safety is not a soft extra. It is the foundation that allows thinking to move again. I have repeatedly seen pupils only really join in once they are no longer busy protecting themselves on the inside.
A different role for mistakes
In many children’s experience of maths, mistakes have played an unfortunate role. They were marked in red, counted, graded or displayed in front of the class. It is easy, then, to internalise: A mistake means I have failed.
In MONTES, I work to shift this meaning. A mistake is first and foremost a trace. It shows how a child has been thinking – and that is precisely what makes it valuable.
I often say: ‘Good, now we can see something.’ A mistake reveals the point at which a line of thought diverged. When we find that point together, there is often an aha moment. Some pupils even laugh when they realise that their mistake followed its own logic – just not the right one for this problem.
This way of working with mistakes takes away the sense of exposure and turns them into a tool for learning.
Taking the pressure off pace
Many children equate maths with speed. Being quick is seen as being good; being slow quickly leads to self-doubt. That link is dangerous, because it paralyses anxious learners further.
Of course, with time maths also requires fluency and automatisation. But at the beginning, understanding matters more than pace. A child who thinks carefully, even if slowly, learns more than one who guesses quickly.
In MONTES, I deliberately slow things down. I keep intermediate steps visible, ask about the idea behind an answer and encourage children to explain how they approached a problem. That is how orientation develops.
Parents frequently report that this makes a real difference: after a while, children seem calmer, less panicked and more willing to face tasks at all.
Understanding, not just completing
Maths anxiety grows when children simply work through exercises mechanically. Everything depends on whether they can recall a procedure. As soon as a task looks slightly different, their confidence collapses.
That is why conceptual understanding is so important to me. I want children not only to know what to do, but also why a particular step makes sense.
I therefore work a lot with questions: What is being asked? What do we already know? What is changing? Where do we see a relationship? This kind of guided questioning takes a little more time, but it strengthens thinking and gives children the sense that they are not just following a recipe – they are actually seeing the structure behind it.
Small steps, real success
Maths anxiety rarely disappears through big promises. It changes through many small experiences such as: I understood that. I solved this one. This time I stayed with it. I could explain what I was thinking.
I therefore design tasks so that success is genuinely possible, without resorting to empty praise. The level needs to be right: not so easy that it feels trivial, and not so hard that the child falls straight back into helplessness.
When a pupil senses that they can handle a task under their own steam, they experience self-efficacy. For me, that feeling is one of the strongest antidotes to anxiety.
Supporting and involving parents
Parents want to help, yet maths at home is often emotionally loaded. Homework becomes a battleground, exams take over family conversations and well-intentioned explanations end in tears or withdrawal.
Many parents I meet are highly committed and, at the same time, drained. It can be a relief when tuition removes some of the pressure from the family. The child has a neutral space where maths can be tackled calmly and without domestic tension.
At the same time, I value regular feedback from parents. Everyday observations often show whether something is truly changing: Does the child start homework earlier? Are they less harsh in the way they speak about themselves? Do they approach tests more calmly? Signs like these can be as meaningful as any individual mark.
When anxiety runs deep
Sometimes tuition on its own is not enough. If a child avoids maths strongly, feels physically unwell, sleeps poorly or experiences intense anxiety days before lessons, further professional support may be needed.
Recognising that boundary matters. MONTES can provide safety, build subject knowledge, strengthen confidence and open up a different relationship with maths. But where anxiety is very strong or linked to other difficulties, learning therapy or psychotherapy can be the right next step.
For me, working responsibly also means seeing this boundary and speaking about it openly.
What can change
When maths anxiety begins to ease, it is often not first visible in dramatic changes in marks. You see it in smaller signs: a child stays with a question for longer; they ask for help sooner; they correct a mistake without crumbling inside; they no longer say straight away, ‘I can’t do this’, but perhaps, ‘I don’t know how yet.’
That shift is significant.
Again and again I see that such experiences make children more open. Maths becomes less of a threat. Sometimes curiosity appears – and with curiosity comes the willingness to keep going.
Keeping doors in education open
Maths is a gateway subject. Not because everyone needs advanced mathematics later on, but because progress in maths often opens or closes options in education. Children who withdraw early out of fear may later rule out courses, training routes or careers that could actually have suited them.
So maths anxiety is about more than a single test. It is about confidence, choices and the experience that a demanding subject does not automatically mark the limits of one’s ability.
This idea shapes my work in MONTES: maths should not make children smaller; it should help them grow.

In MONTES, I combine solid maths tuition with psychological attentiveness. I explain, practise and prepare for exams, while also watching how a child responds to pressure, mistakes, pace and self-doubt.
My aim is for pupils to experience maths as something they can face again – not perfectly, not always without effort, but with more calm, more structure and greater trust in their own thinking.
When that happens, more than just a method of solution opens up. New opportunities in education open up as well.
